Troy Empty Troy

Post by Phaethon Thu Oct 08, 2020 12:49 pm

The troy ounce is legally used for the sale of metal bullion. It is the normal weight by which precious metal prices are quoted. This cannot be changed readily, because of the large number of historical bullion artefacts such as ingots and coins bearing designs used for investment. If they were melted down, it would destroy their provenance.

Twelve troy ounces make a troy pound. A cube of water weighing a troy pound would have an edge length so nearly equal to six dozen or half a dozen dozen millimetres that the millimetre can be regarded as part of a dozenal system of measurement incorporating the troy weight. The millimetre IS a dozenal unit of length!

A cube of six or half a dozen millimetres produces a mass of water that is a square twelfth of a troy ounce or cubic twelfth of a pound troy. This little mass can be regarded as a kind of carat weight, at the extreme heavy end on the scale for the range of historical carats, close to the carat of Livorno. Twelve pounds troy of water has a volume near to an imperial gallon.
