Dozenal Numismatics

For conversion of the base of arithmetic from decimal to dozenal, it is proposed that the denominations of money should be made at rounded values or factors of the base twelve instead of ten. While it is possible to consider many improvements and innovations in the way money is produced, for the purpose of introduction of base twelve, only those changes that are necessary for implementation of dozenal are recommended as essential, whereas other proposals are advised for later stages provided the initial transition to dozenal has been successful. Thus, only the values of the monetary denominations need be changed as far as adaptation of currency is concerned. The minimum change is that which retains as much as possible existing units and denominations by incorporating or translating them into a dozenal scheme at suitable values.

My current proposal is that in existing decimal currency denominations, where there are consecutive values such that one is twice the middle one and another is half the middle value, these are to be mapped to the quarter, half, and unit of the dozenal currency. For example, in the system of coins in the euro currency, there is a double euro coin, a single euro coin, and a fifty cent coin. These would become the dozenal unit of its currency, the six dozen square dozenths, and the three dozen square dozenths of the unit of currency, where a square dozenth part of the dozenal unit of currency may be named, analogously to the decimal cent, a zent, or a zenth. Similarly, the dollar, half dollar, and quarter dollar coins of the American currency may become the dozenal unit of currency, its half or six dozen square dozenths, and the quarter or three dozen square dozenths.

This proposal maintains therefore three coins unmodified as regards size, shape, and weight or mass, thus minimising disruption to vending machines and automated payment kiosks. These old coins can remain in circulation until they are replaced from wear and tear. This practical proposal in principle is similar to how pre-decimal coins were converted to decimal coins during decimalisation in the British Isles.

The only coin that would need to be minted would be the one that has the value of twelve square dozenths of the dozenal currency unit. Smaller denominations are discouraged because of inflation.

In some countries, the minting of coins and notes of money by any other body than the state may not be legal due to anticounterfeiting laws. If a dozenal organisation wishes to proceed with production of dozenal money for the purposes and use of its adherents without national government authorisation, it would be possible to find a legal loophole to avoid such a barrier to the implementation of dozenal by basing the dozenal currency on a commodity. Due to the cost of manufacture, it is not insisted upon that the set values of the denominations match the raw material value. Nevertheless, it is envisaged that certain protocols or guarantees are pledged to investors in such a commodity to prevent the acceptance value of such an interim currency falling below a certain proportion of its raw material. Furthermore, measures may be adopted in an attempt to increase the value of the commodities above the raw material value for example by added value through artistic designs and collector appeal. There is a market for this kind of investment among the super wealthy as a hedge against inflation of currencies that are not based on commodities.

There is also a market, of course, for digital currencies. If the dozenists could simultaneously tap into this cryptocurrency market in a dozenal way it would help the cause. However, I do not see how this could be so easily done without mandating dozenal at the level of legislation and the pre-adoption of base twelve generally in society. It is unlikely to be a driver of change in this direction but rather a follower of change.

In keeping with the principle of minimum change, it is not proposed here that various currencies of the world need to be agglomerated into a single global currency. Rather, it is stipulated that all currencies of the world be converted to dozenal in their own ways as long as this is desired. I believe it is necessary to have a variety of currencies in order to maintain inequalities of income among the "developed" and less developed countries whereby the ability of richer nations to purchase labour and goods at relatively low prices is enabled, thus facilitating productivity and trade. It is hoped that the dozenal currency would become an elitist currency by which the ordinary citizen may live like royalty, thereby incentivising recruitment of dozenal proponents. Surely this ultimate goal of allowing dozenal numeration in transactions is not one that true fervent dozenists would want to suppress ideologically.

All the while, there is another route to motivation of dozenal activists, which would be through simultaneous appeal for eradication of exclusive government manipulative control and toppling of world currencies into a unified dozenal currency for sociological and compassionate grounds. Here, language would be used that is satisfactory to the oppressed ordinary worker.
